Is Divorce Costing Fla Taxpayers Nearly $2 Billion?

The Florida Family Policy Council is giving lawmakers a report showing the decline of two-parent families and marriage in Florida in hopes it will begin a conversation on what the state can do to strengthen families.

The group wants the Legislature to consider forming a commission to look at what government can do to preserve families.

Council President John Stemberger says the breakdown of families has a large economic impact on the state. The report looks at the costs of social programs like Medicaid and food stamps as well as marriage and birth rates.

Stemberger estimated that fragmented families costs the state $1.9 billion a year.
